Sexy, Stressful Religion: Sex and Stress Drive Religious Behavior …

The Gospel Truth

I’ve just finished reading The Gospel Truth: A Lectionary-Based Catechism for Adults , by Kenneth Ogorek, sent to me by The Catholic Company . For each of the Sunday liturgies in all three cycles, the book includes the Gospel reading, a short discussion linked to relevent sections of the Catechism, three questions for reflection (one intended for children) and some suggestions for further reading from both scripture and the Catechism.

Teen Talk: Teen sees girls’ inner beauty; buddies are stuck on a scale

HI KELLY: I’m a guy in high school, and my friends all call me a “chubby chaser,” meaning I like girls who are fat. I say it’s not true; I just like girls who aren’t super-skinny. Anytime I mention a girl I like, my friends ask if she weighs more than they do or if I can get my arms around her to hug her, etc

Panel to favor partial ban on full veil in France

PARIS — A parliamentary panel will recommend on Tuesday that France ban face-covering Muslim veils in public locations such as hospitals and schools, but not in private buildings or on the street, the group’s president said. The decision appeared to indicate that the 32-member, multiparty panel had heeded warnings that a full ban of the all-encompassing veils would be unfair, possibly unconstitutional, and could even cause trouble in a country where Islam is the second largest religion.

Blogging and the (Non-) Democratization of American Religious History

Paul Harvey At the 2010 American Historical Association, my co-editor Randall Stephens organized a session “American Religious Historians Online,” featuring presentations by the likes of Randall himself, Kathryn Lofton (Yale), Gary Laderman (Emory, and editor of Religion Dispatches ), Rebecca Goetz (who started blogging at Historianess back in the Stone Ages), and myself. I was not present at the session itself, but Randall read my presentation for me

The Dimensions Reside Chiefly in the Acting and Storytelling

There is justice in the world, just not very much: notwithstanding its absence of useless three-dee visuals and merchandising-friendly battle dragons, Mad Men won well-deserved SAG awards for best drama and best performance by an ensemble. Call it quaint , but I much prefer to see extra dimension where Mad Men ‘s creators put it. And thus the terrorists have lost — this time

Atheism, Agnosticism and Teenage Rebellion : Greg Laden's Blog

The Truth Pressed Flat

O heavens. It appears that Sam Harris and company are now defiling the very grave of Socrates by making definite claims about the shortcomings of faith as a truth-finding mechanism and the really existing consequences of religious enthusiasm — so unlike wiser men writing in gentler times . Look away if you have a weak stomach: many of the claims are expressed with a bluntness that doesn’t seem crafted to flatter a worldwide majority of religious believers.

Chilcot is a stage for Labour’s psychodrama

It’s judgment day, the war criminal is being brought to trial. Tony Blair’s appearance at the Chilcot inquiry on Friday is turning into a voyeuristic spectacle, a modern-day equivalent of the public hangings where crowds gathered around the gallows to jeer.

Al-Qaeda is losing. Prepare for a daring hit

‘God willing, our raids on you will continue,” said Osama bin Laden — or someone purporting to be him — in a message broadcast on al-Jazeera over the weekend. The blunt message to “Obama from Osama” is intended to reaffirm that, despite Barack Obama’s overtures to the Islamic world, he and his country remain infidels, every bit as evil as they were under George W. Bush

The Bishop vs the IRD

Back in November, the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church published a document called “God’s Renewed Creation: A Call to Hope and Action.” It was essentially an update of an earlier document, a theological statement about environmental concerns but also addressing poverty and proliferation of weapons and violence.

People of the (Christian) book

On December 1, 2009, CBA (which was formerly called the Christian Booksellers Association, back when Christian bookstores sold more books than gifts and other merchandise) asked the Department of Justice to investigate alleged predatory pricing by big-box stores and online retailers that threatens the very existence of the nation’s dwindling number of Christian retailing outlets. On January 7, 2010, Adelle M.

Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul

There was a particular point during my years as a Buddhist when I was struggling with the question whether to give up the vows I had taken as a Buddhist nun and to return to lay life. Aggravating my struggle was the sense that I had somehow irrevocably blown it, that I was hopelessly confused.
