21-22 After proclaiming the Message in Derbe and establishing a strong core of disciples, they retraced their steps to Lystra, then Iconium, and then Antioch, putting muscle and sinew in the lives of the disciples, urging them to stick with what they had begun to believe and not quit, making it clear to them that it wouldn’t be easy: “Anyone signing up for the kingdom of God has to go through plenty of hard times.” 23-26 Paul and Barnabas handpicked leaders in each church.

Subtitle: 9 Essential Characteristics of Influential Christian Leaders, 2005. A decade ago I took a class on mentoring and had to read Howard Hendricks ( As Iron Sharpens Iron) and Ted Engstrom ( The Fine Art of Mentoring ) among other books. They convinced me of the critical importance of this subject. From my experience in life and ministry, and my observation of both, I am increasingly convinced of the importance of mentoring.

BANGALORE, India — Popping out of an auto rickshaw, Manohar Elavarthi unloaded a backpack stuffed with protest posters. Soon he would be rushing to a street demonstration, one that would bring together low-caste Dalit activists, Gandhians, cross-dressers and members of domestic workers unions.

A few months ago, Jerry Coyne posed a challenge and offered prizes for any takers: In reading the accommodationist literature of the National Academy of Sciences, the NCSE, the NAS, and theologians like John Haught, John Polkinghorne, etc., I constantly hear that “faith and science are two different ways of understanding the world; each gives us access to different truths.” Using the Oxford English Dictionary definition of truth given below, please name one truth about the world and/or universe that has been arrived at by faith alone, could not be arrived at by secular reason or science, and that is true in that it is in principle verifiable by all people. OED: Truth: Conformity with fact; agreement with reality The incoming answers did not lack for quantity but fell short in quality: The “truths” that are supposedly found by faith turn out to be nothing more than moral dictums like the Golden Rule.

“War Communism”, the Red Terror, and Lenin’s Famine Almost immediately after they seized power, Lenin’s Bolsheviks inaugurated an endless stream of economic decrees and policies. These proved to be disastrous, resulting in a horrific famine, depopulation of the cities, and an enormous decline in living standards. So unpopular were these policies that after they were finally altered in mid 1921, Lenin tried to re-write their history.

Cutting the size of government is now the only game in town — at least, for those who would like to prevent taxes rising to the point that there becomes little point in working or saving. Unless spending is put on a sharply declining path, the UK faces a decade of persistent deficits, stagnant growth and a steady loss of leadership to other, better founded economies across the globe.

What is it about arresting people for war crimes that the Government doesn’t like? After Iraq, you’d think an administration that may be in legacy mode would want to stamp some late-term legitimacy on its 12 years in office. But rumours are growing in Whitehall that Jack Straw is about to turn his back on bringing suspected mass murderers to justice in UK courts

The most fundamental divide between men and women doesn’t lie in their attitude to Carla Bruni, rugby league, slim panatellas, tinted moisturiser, fabric swatches, Bacardi Breezers or even scented candles. There are women I know who enjoy a pint and Castella, even as they flick through the pages of Tatler. Indeed, some of them even worked at that magazine.

A discussion on Butterflies and Wheels has brought back a 2007 study by Pew Research on how Americans perceive compatibility between science and religion. From the report’s summary : How can Americans say that they respect science and even know what scientists believe and yet still disagree with the scientific community on some fundamental questions? The answer is that much of the general public simply chooses not to believe the scientific theories and discoveries that seem to contradict long-held religious or other important beliefs …

About 10 years ago when I was finishing up the process of formation for being ordained as a deacon, I recall one class session in which we were asked to identify the prophets of our time. I recall hearing the names, among others, of Pope John Paul II, Mother Theresa of Calcutta, Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, Gandhi, and Archbishop Oscar Romero. Something I noticed was that, other than two or three notable contemporary names, we tended to select figures from the past 40 years or so of re

Britain’s Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks , writes in last Thursday’s Jewish Chronicle , sharply criticizing an appellate court decision that struck down the admissions policy of a publicly-funded Jewish school in London. The Court of Appeal held that JFS, by following the traditional Orthodox definition of who is a Jew, engaged in “racial” discrimination rather than in admissions based on religious preferences

Chrisliu(吉燠 in Lahore for a week) posted a photo: Located in the Naulakha Mandi that starts from Landa Market eastward to the Railway Station, this gurdwara is related to the misery of many sikh women who were imprisoned here to grind wheat and their sons who were beheaded and thrown into the deep well next to it. Unlike other gurdwaras, the Holy Book of Sikhism, Sri Granith Sahib is not placed here, though I did see a small doorless chamer with a bed that looks like the resting place for the guru.

Any brief incursion into the history of Christian pilgrimages, especially in their heyday from around 1050 to 1550 and a recounting of what happened on the most popular pilgrimage routes (Holy Land, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Canterbury) reveal five common characteristics: A deep desire for forgiveness of sins, absolution, or “papal indulgence.” There even arose “pilgrim passports” to be sta
