Akal Takht tells Sikhs to go green I P Singh, TNN 27 July 2009, 03:34am IST Akal Takht Jathedar Gurbachan Singh gave a religious call to the community on Sunday saying Sikhs should now focus on cleaning the natural water resources rather than spending more money on building up new gurdwaras. SULTANPUR LODHI: Akal Takht, the highest Sikh temporal body, has embraced the save-the-environment mantra telling Sikhs across the world it was their ‘‘moral and religious duty’’ to care for the nature.

While I have not faltered in my belief in the futility of prayer, I have to admit that were I subjected to this sort of treatment to “deliver me from” my heterosexuality, I would be strongly inclined to go along with it. Mind you, these histrionics have no actual effect on the psychological and physiological roots of sexual orientation (whatever they might be in the end), but such theatrics could cause anyone to re-think the very idea of keeping company with other human beings, no matter the particulars of the relationship: It seems to me a few minutes of that would make anyone appreciate the company of Wilson from Castaway , whatever the shortcomings of that friendship: (via Miss Welby )

Public perceptions of handsome men and movies have taken a hit from which they may never recover — it seems that handsome film actor Brad Pitt has expressed an opinion with which many disagree: The 45-year-old actor doesn’t believe in God, he told Bild.com. “No, no, no!,” he declared, when asked if he believes in a higher power, or if he was spiritual. “I’m probably 20 percent atheist and 80 percent agnostic.

A fast-moving storm ripped through parts of Upper Bucks County late Sunday afternoon leaving fallen trees and downed wires in its wake.“It looked like a bomb hit the area,” a Nockamixon man could be overheard telling his friend. Just what did hit the area may have been a funnel cloud, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Greg Heavener.“We won’t know for certain until Bucks County Emergency Management officials examine the area and file a report,” said Heavener Sunday night.

A simply gorgeous wedding yesterday! Thanks for an amazing team effort by all of Cari and Kyle’s wedding vendors and to their familty and wedding party. Everyone worked together to make it happen. I know I say it all the time but it really is what it takes to make a nice wedding, a really amazing wedding. All day long everything went just as planned. Even the weather cooperated. Thanks again to Lyrica for a beautiful music at the church. This church was the 1st church that Debbie, (

In 80 cities across the globe this weekend, demonstrators belatedly gathered in support of Iran’s voters. But international solidarity has taken a full six weeks since the stolen elections to manifest itself, and many people outside Iran must have wondered whether it was not too late to “make a difference”.

When I read in the pages of this newspaper this month that the Conservative Party was planning to transfer people’s health data to Google, my heart sank. The policy described was so naive I could only hope that it was an unapproved kite-flying exercise by a young researcher in Conservative HQ. If not, what was proposed was both dangerous in its own right, and hazardous to the public acceptability of necessary reforms to the state’s handling of our private information

At Stonewall we sometimes hold what we call “it might not be” conversations with people who complain to us about discrimination. This means having to tell someone that, upon close examination, it might not be because they’re gay that they remain unpromoted or were passed over in a pay review.

Al Gore call your office: Three Australasian researchers have shown that natural forces are the dominant influence on climate, in a study just published in the highly-regarded Journal of Geophysical Research. According to this study little or none of the late 20th century global warming and cooling can be attributed to human activity. The research, by Chris de Freitas, a climate scientist at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, John McLean (Melbourne) and Bob Carter (James Cook University)

well not exactly 20 years to the day, but indeed 20 years since yours truly graduated from Lakeland High School in White Lake, MI. Last night, I went to my reunion… I really was torn about whether I should go or not and wrote about it on the blog. The comments I received both here and on Facebook , a few from former classmates, helped me to decide that yeah I should go. The nice thing was that our “rival” high school, Milford , was also having their reunion the same night at the same pl

Man, is Saturday Night a bad night for this show, or what? Even I, who love it with an entirely inappropriate fervor, keep forgetting it’s even on, getting distracted by fireworks one night, and a Justice League Unlimited marathon the next. Talk about a show being consigned to outer darkness, it’s schedule is so remote that even those who love it frequently forget it exists.

In the so-called “flying Imams” case (see prior posting ), a Minnesota federal district court on Friday refused to dismiss false arrest, unreasonable search and seizure and equal protection claims against Metropolitan Airport Commission officers. The six plaintiffs, all imams, were removed from U.S. Airways Flight 300 in 2006 as they were returning from the North American Imams Federation conference held in Minneapolis.

Dear Geraldo, This is in reference to the segment of you show on July 25th, that purported to answer the question of Obama’s “citizenship.” I was struck by the dismissive way that you and your guests treated the subject of under the topical aegis of “citizenship.” You and I both know that citizenship is not the question; the question is: “Does Obama qualify under the provisions of Article II Section 1?” I realize that calling on an Obama supporter to answer the question is like asking the

My dad is very religious and he’s a good christian; he goes to church very often but being single he has to go alone and he would love to meet somebody who would accompany him to the church. So I had the idea of checking christian dating sites since this may be a good way for him to meet christian women. My daddy followed my advice and he joined one of these christian dating ( christian dating sites ) sites; as this could actually help him meet new people.

Opening thought : I am excited today, because today we start together a journey through one of the most Christ-centered books of the Bible – the letter from Paul to the Colossians. I’m going to give the Lord and you my best as we ask the Holy Spirit to open this letter to our understanding in the next several months. When I correspond with many of my West African Christian brothers or sisters, they often begin their letters or emails with an arresting stylistic phrase that mirrors the way Paul begins his letters.

This is “the time of [spiritual] Jacob’s trouble” and so, obviously, it is not the time for a Church that is splintered into factions within itself. It is not the time to be debating ancillary issues like 1) are there really three persons in the Godhead? and 2) was Jesus a white Man or was He brown, red or black?Let’s deal with issue#1 first:Are There Three Persons in the Godhead? Whoa there! Before you go off into an explosive snit, remember we are Christians following the lowly Nazarene who w

So what do you think of when you hear or read the word “evangelist”? Perhaps it would be better to frame the question this way: “ Who do you think of when hear or read the word ‘evangelist’?” I would predict that the average consumer of the news would give a simple response to the second question — “Billy Graham.” Truth is, Graham does fit the most common Protestant definition of that term

With its usual self-serving incoherence, Gordon Brown’s government has come out, in the person of the Blairite MP Alan Milburn, in favour of “pushy parents”. Milburn’s report for Brown on social mobility found that “parental interest has four times more influence on attainment by the age of 16 than does socioeconomic background”
