I wish that i could find the motivation to wake up in the morning for sunrises – the closest i have come thus far was a close-call to a nuit-blanche spent reading Stranger in a Strange Land. Finally in possession of my photos from Rome and now inspired to start being a shutterbug in Perugia, i will be providing my readers with some photos arranged thematically on days when i can’t bring myself to write out long-winded epistles about the events of the past twenty-four hours.

Now that it’s allegedly summer, I thought I’d kinda resurrect a previous post and do up a little Visitor’s Guide to Dublin which might be useful to those of you coming on your holliers here over the next few months. I thought I’d break it up into categories, to make it easier to read, so that you don’t all fall into a coma after paragraph 15, so for now I present to you, The Weather and Getting Around on Foot. The Weather There is really only one thing to remember when it comes to Irish we

Science Foo (scifoo) 2009 registration I just wrapped up an amazing weekend participating in the fourth annual scifoo gathering at Google headquarters (the Googleplex) in Mountain View, CA. The 2009 scifoo camp boasted a fascinating and stimulating array of stars from the science/tech community: Dean Kamen, Marvin Minsky, Bill Nye (the science guy!), Elon Musk, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, George Church, and many, many more. Best of all for Hub readers is that I was able to dig up some amazi

I mentioned more than once while on vacation about a month ago, that I had intentioned to write a “what i learned during my lent fast” post. Figured it was probably so long overdue or so long since i put real thought to it that it would fall into the “mental compost” blog pile…with the one about how I once saw myself as the ‘bride’ in Hosea and am still brought to (happy) tears when i remember Ryan’s response (during early engagement…when he still had an easy ‘out’) to my divulging the shady pa

Christine Sunderland of CatholicFiction.net reviews The Death of a Pope by Piers Paul Read:This thoughtful literary thriller addresses weighty and timely themes: not only challenges to belief in an unbelieving world, but the devastation of AIDS and sexual license, the disparity between first and third worlds, rich and poor, and the role of a Church guided by tradition. Secular versus religious, Muslim versus Christian, new versus old: who are the real combatants today?

Yesterday we saw how it is possible to preach a pseudo-expository sermon by failing to live up to all four elements of an expository preaching definition. We looked at preaching without relying on God’s Spirit (making it a human-powered exercise). We looked at preaching from a text, but not really preaching the text (a common form of pseudo-expository preaching). Now for the other two elements: 3 – The issue of effective communication. I suppose this is somewhat subjective, but I would argue that a preacher deliberately not improving in their ability to communicate (perhaps due to a misunderstanding of 1Cor.2:1-5), is undermining their own stewardship of the ministry opportunity. Furthermore it is worth noting that our communication is not just about logos and pathos during the delivery, but the ethos of the entire life

Whether you’re a parent, a prospective parent, or just someone who enjoys giving unsolicited advice to parents, I strongly recommend the recent Point of Inquiry podcast featuring Dale McGowan , the author of the excellent Parenting Beyond Belief and the more recent and equally excellent-sounding Raising Freethinkers: A Practical Guide for Parenting Beyond Belief . The discussion with DJ Grothe is full of good sense for anyone who cares to raise children to become independent and inquisitive-minded adults
