Rev. Joe Cobb: Facing Change . . . Gay Clergy, Same-Gender Blessings, and the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act

The writer James Baldwin , describing himself not as an “activist”, but as a “witness” in the world, once said that “not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” As a witness in the world these days, I want to celebrate three bold changes being faced with courage, authenticity and risk. In mid-July, the Episcopal Church’s General Convention adopted a resolution lifting the moratorium on ordaining gay clergy and bishops in committed relati

The Price of Universal Coverage Just Went Up

Since at least February, President Obama and other elders of the Church of Universal Coverage have labored to create the impression that universal coverage is inevitable, because a sense of inevitability reduces its cost.? If interest groups think this train is leaving the station, they are less likely to stand in its way.? Lobbyists are more likely to cut whatever deal they can if their clients believe, #8220;It could have been much worse.#8221;

Bishop Whalon reflects on General Convention

Anglicans Online has a thoughtful reflection from Bishop Pierre Whalon (Bishop-in-Charge of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe). Bishop Whalon writes about how easy it is to misunderstand what happened at General Convention, especially with the attention-getting resolutions on same-sex blessings (C056) and the ordination of bishops in same-sex partnerships (D025). We are reminded that no moratoria have been overturned, at least if you read the words of the resolutions themselves.

Being Corn

We in the USA are, to a close first approximation, corn — whether we want to be or not, whether we like corn or not, whether we consciously purchase or deliberately eat corn or not. That reality, the consequence of concrete political choices made over decades, is one fundamental takeaway of the 2007 documentary King Corn : Life is short, and in my case, too short to accommodate the effort required to achieve a detailed understanding of the nature and origins of the bulk of the food I eat. I accept, albeit not enthusiastically, that I will read food packaging and find items I cannot hope to identify, let alone account for

RNS: Rowan Williams Suggests Secondary Role for Rebel Episcopal Church

Despite the warning, Episcopalians overwhelmingly voted to lift a de facto ban on consecrating other gay bishops and approved a broad local option for bishops who wish to allow gay and lesbian couples to receive nuptial blessings from the church. Episcopal leaders later sought to cut off criticism with a letter to Williams that described the measures as simply “descriptive” of a church ministering to a culture with rapidly changing understandings of homosexuality. Williams responded Monday w

Much More on the New Church Committee

Through the wonders of Twitter, Nick Schwellenbach sends along this piece he wrote way way back in 2007 about the need for a new Church committee. Consider it valuable background for my piece today . Basically, Nick argued, don’t look to the courts to save you: After years of congressional acquiescence to the executive in many matters, we’re starting to see some awakening and hard questioning.  However, there is a paucity of publicly-revealed oversight of intelligence agencies and wheth
