Culver Indiana Wedding: Mark and Lindsey

Gonna start off with my favorite photo of the day.  This was the photo Mark requested because he asked Lindsey to marry him by the lighthouse.  Isn’t that so sweet that he wanted a picture there.  Also Bob (aka my hubby, aka assistant for the day) and I worked together to get this shot, he did an awesome job holding the reflector for me and finding great light.  Teamwork. Bob grabbed this one of Rikki and Trevor when they started walking down the aisle. Lindsey’s mom and grandma…

Canine door into the real Islamabad

When you are dealing with a really talented report, one who really knows how to listen and tell the stories of real people, religion can show up in the most unusual and touching places. Veteran Washington Post foreign correspondent Pamela Constable is one of the best and, clearly, she gets religion — in a wide variety of cultures. She has even written a book on that, “ Fragments of Grace : My Search for Meaning in the Strife of South Asia.” I should be honest and admit that Constable has spoken to my students before on Capital Hill, when stateside, and I sure hope that she can do that again.

Interfaith Dating: It Ain’t Just For NoMos Anymore

On a recent first date, I found myself discussing, with the suitor in question, the topic of previous relationships. We established that we both have a history of dating people for three or four months on average, before one party or the other decides it’s not working and everyone moves on (though rarely so undramatically as I’ve just summarized it); I suggested this happens because three months is about how long it takes to determine whether a thing has the grip to go long-term. He responded –

Month of Sundays: August 2009

What do you do when it’s the final day on a $10 off a $10 purchase coupon, 50% off clearance prices, AND another 15% off for using the right card?  Get shopping!  The truly frugal will hope to find something with a final price of just over $10, making it “so cheap it’s almost free” (a favorite phrase of mine). I thought I had really done it:  marked down from $46 to $23, half off, plus the extra 15%.  But the thing rang up like $5 and something!  So I had to go back and get more stuff.

Corazon Aquino Dead: Former Philippines President Dies At 76

MANILA, Philippines — Former President Corazon Aquino, who swept away a dictator with a “people power” revolt and then sustained democracy by fighting off seven coup attempts in six years, died on Saturday, her son said. She was 76. The uprising she led in 1986 ended the repressive 20-year regime of Ferdinand Marcos and inspired nonviolent protests across the globe, including those that ended Communist rule in eastern Europe

Why I’m opposed to legalising assisted suicide

When I die, and if I have to arrange it myself, I will consult nobody, and do it unassisted if I can. I entertain not a flicker of moral or practical doubt on the subject, and never have. Speaking only for myself — in such matters one should never judge for others — if Nature does not do the job in a timely manner I shall consider it a duty to take matters into my own hands

The poor little mutt. But was it rude to stare?

Just when you thought that every imaginable etiquette question had been posed and answered, suddenly, from nowhere, just when you’re on holiday in the South of France and at least 1,000 miles from the nearest Debrett’s or glossy-mag advice page, a real rip-snorter leaps up and leaves you foundering, to wit: is it rude to stare at a disabled dog?

Why Take a Cautious Approach to Seeming Changes?

When some changes to Gospel Principles were publicized , the Mormon response was varied. Some of the more intellectual Mormons with quaint positions (such as a denial of vivaporous spirit birth, the past progression of God from mere mortality unto godhood, and the existence of a female-gendered Heavenly Mother) were undoubtedly happy to see what they thought might be an institutional step to back off of traditional notions and allow for more theological diversity within the rank and file. One

Italy Approves Abortion Pill

In the face of strong conservative Catholic opposition, Italy has finally approved the use of the RU486 abortion drug—a pill which can abort a fetus up to the seventh week of pregnancy. The pill was first introduced 20 years ago in France, but it has seemingly taken those 20 years for Italy to come to terms with women’s reproductive rights. The Guardian: Italy’s health and drugs authorities have approved the use of the abortion drug RU486, drawing immediate protests by the Vatican

Bishops vs. The Bomb: Act II

by John Gehring07-31-2009 When the United States and the Soviet Union stared into the abyss of nuclear Armageddon during the Cold War, filmmaker Stanley Kubrick began reading obscure journals like the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and consulting with leading military minds. The research became fodder for his 1964 film, Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, a cult classic that skewered the paranoia, absurdity, and surreal logic driving the nuclear arms race.

Emma Watson Descended From A Real Witch?

You ever wonder why Hermione Granger does so well at Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry ? Mebbe it’s because the actress who plays her in the movies, Emma Watson , is descended from a “real” witch. According to People magazine, it has been determined that Emma ’s family has an ancestor who was tried as a “real” witch back in the days of yore … which is terribly interesting only because, as we all know, Emma gained fame and fortune from playing a witch in the Harry Potter

The ‘What a Planet’ Experience

My husband Andy Schmookler wrote this piece, which I like very much.  I think he does a good job of expressing the ‘Wow’ that many of us feel at those moments when the beauty of our planet just takes our breath away.– April Moore Once in a while, I get an experience that leads me to say, “What a planet!” I remember the very first time I actually made that exclamation. It was in Arizona, in the mid-1970s. At the time, I lived in Prescott and whenever the trip from home was to sout

Seven-Year Old Chased by Plain City Police

A not so often seen chase took place last Sunday on the streets of Plain City, Weber County, after the local sheriff’s department received a call warning authorities of a “small”, reckless driver on the streets of the city. The 45 mph (74 km/h) chase had started near the local high-school and lasted for some ten blocks, until the driver decided to stop, exit the car and run. “The deputies at one time had pulled up kinda close to him on the side and could see it was a very small… person driving t

Judge postpones ruling on sale of farm sect considers future temple site

A Utah judge suggested Wednesday she may offer a polygamous sect’s historic farm to the highest bidder — a sale hundreds of FLDS members gathered outside the Matheson Courthouse Wednesday to oppose. Salt Lake City accountant Bruce R. Wisan, who has overseen the trust for the past four years, wants to sell the farm property to solve the trust’s “liquidity” crisis

Settlement Reached In Church’s Use of Pensacola FL Park

Alliance Defense Fund yesterday announced that a settlement has been reached in the lawsuit brought against the city of Pensacola, Florida by St. Faustina Old Catholic Church challenging restrictions on use of a downtown park for a weekly picnic by a Bible study group that shared its food with the hungry. (See prior posting .) Apparently under the settlement, the church will be allowed to hold picnics in the park during summer months, but concern about preserving park grass has led to a ban on use by large groups during the winter.

Some Polish Catholics Protest Upcoming Madonna Concert

August 15 is the Catholic feast of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary . Freemuse and Indeks 73 both report this week that in Poland, conservative Catholics are protesting the Madonna concert scheduled for that day in Warsaw. Appeals are being made to the President of the city Warsaw, the mayor of Bemowo (the Warsaw district where the concert is going to take place) and the Minister of the Interior and Administration to convince them to cancel or postpone the concert

7-Year Old Takes Cops On Chase to Avoid Church

This story really should be one of our Jokey Jokes, but we’re going to try and not laugh and say, “Children and parents, don’t teach your children how to drive prematurely.   This could happen to you and your family and this young man was very fortunate that this escapade did not cause more serious repercussions.  Someone could’ve died, but thank God they didn’t.”  And we hope that he got his little butt whooped!  Check him out:  Share

Assurances on Convention Actions ‘Unpersuasive,’ Archbishop Says

By George Conger, The Living Church The adoption of resolutions D025 and C056 by the 76th General Convention speaks to an unhealthy degree of theological ignorance and ecclesiastical incoherence at work within the higher councils of The Episcopal Church [TEC], Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams said in a statement released July 27. While the adoption of resolutions on rites for the blessing of same-sex unions and the consecration of gay clergy to the episcopate have not created a de

Critical Thinking, n.

In 1988, the American Philosophical Society produced a paper titled “Critical Thinking: A Statement of Expert Consensus for Purposes of Educational Assessment and Instruction.” From these imperious and slightly Orwellian beginnings emerged a nice summary of the anti-totalitarian, duly skeptical, reality-grounded, reason-responsive approach to thinking: The ideal critical thinker is habitually inquisitive, well-informed, trustful of reason, open-minded, flexible, fair-minded in evaluation, honest in facing personal biases, prudent in making judgments, willing to reconsider, clear about issues, orderly in complex matters, diligent in seeking relevant information, reasonable in the selection of criteria, focused in inquiry, and persistent in seeking results which are as precise as the subject and the circumstances of inquiry permit. I like adding a little smart-ass for spice, but tastes vary.
