Sometimes you just need to write

We had a great trip to Costa Rica and I will share more about that soon, but I just need a safe place to write now.  J has been out of work since early March.  He closed his law firm after about 4 months of slowly shutting down, not taking new clients, etc.  It was deliberate.  We were both OK with it.  He planned to take a break for a bit and then get a new job pretty soon, figuring that it wouldn’t be too tough as a lawyer with 6 years of experience and as a small-business owner.

When Wearing What’s Right Makes You Cranky

I’m one of the preacher’s for tomorrow morning’s worship service that kicks off the convention of the New England Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and honored to do so, except that I’m kind of bummed out by the request to wear our Big Puffy Preaching Gowns and Academic Hoods. I know such regalia is appropriate to the occasionl; this is purely a matter of personal preference and comfort, which as PeaceBang likes to say, Is Not What We’re Here To Serve.

Two pop thinkers and their fight about zero

There was a life before the internet. It’s hard to imagine now, but when people wanted to find stuff out or read things, they had to stand up, walk to a bookshelf and brush away the dust. And, get this, people would, once upon a time, expect to pay for the movies they watched, the books they read or music they listened to

Perfection of Love – On the Perfection of the Spiritual Life II

Perfection Is Found Both According to Love of God and Love of Our Neighbor [Since to be alive spiritually means to love, Thomas concluded that to be perfect in the spiritual life means to be perfect in love. Here he continues to examine what kind(s) of love that is.] Having considered that perfection consists primarily in regard to charity, it is clear in what the perfection of the spiritual life consists. For there are two precepts of charity, one pertaining to the love of God, the other to the love of neighbor

Just Because You Feel It, Doesn’t Mean It’s There

Days of Hope, Religion of Fear: Reflections on Jason Bivins’s Religion of Fear: The Politics of Horror in Conservative Evangelicalism by Paul Harvey Just Because You Feel It, Doesn’t Mean It’s There — “There There,” Radiohead Reading Jason Bivins’s Religion of Fear made me think, not so much of Hell Houses or planes flying aborted fetus pictures over Notre Dame, but of Arcade Fire’s Intervention : I can taste the fear Gonna lift me up and take me out of here And it made me think of Don Delillo’s White Noise, which played so expertly and wittily on social paranoia as a broader product of secular horror – as seen in the “airborne toxic event” that drives the plot of the novel. Perhaps I’m thinking of that today while sitting in hippy-trippy Crestone, Colorad o, right at the base of the Sangre de Christos, surrounded by a plethora of religious communities; and sitting at the Shambala Café, listening to the rather paranoiac musings of some of the locals, who are (unwittingly) serving as a counterpoint but also counterpart to the subjects of Bivins’s work, and who seem cumulatively like a DeLillo character come to life. It should be called the Department of Offense, not the Department of Defense, man

Solitary Con-demnation

If prolonged isolation is—as research and experience have confirmed for decades—so objectively horrifying, so intrinsically cruel, how did we end up with a prison system that may subject more of our own citizens to it than any other country in history has? So asks Atul Gawande, writing in the New Yorker . In his article ” Hellhole ,” Gawande looks at studies (of monkeys tested in isolation and prisoners of war) that show how solitary confinement—a relatively new corrections tactic—produces individuals given to either greater violence or greater insanity

Paper Complains That Mandated Free Day At Holy Land Experience Too Narrowly Advertised

In 2006, the Florida legislature passed a law assuring a property tax exemption for Holy Land Experience religious theme park– assuring it a tax savings of about $300,000 per year. In order to keep the exemption, Holy Land was required by the law to offer one free-admission day per year. Yesterday’s Orlando Sentinel complained that Holy Land only advertises the date of the free-day on the local Trinity Broadcasting Network channel– WTGL–TV58.

Israel’s High Court Orders Kashrut Certificate For Bakery Owned By Messianic Jew

Israel’s High Court of Justice yesterday ordered the Rabbinate in the city of Ashdod to grant a kashrut certificate (kosher certification) to a bakery owned by a Messianic Jew. Haaretz reports that the Chief Rabbinate Council had required bakery owner Pnina Comporati to have enhanced supervision because her beliefs, they felt, meant she could not be trusted to keep her bakery kosher. A 3-judge panel of the High Court ruled, however, that so long as an applicant’s beliefs do not themselves affect the kashrut of the food, the Rabbinate has no authority to impose discriminatory requirements based on beliefs.
