A Victoria-based Sikh association on Tuesday received a grant of 10,000 dollars from the Australian state’s Labour government as part of a programme to strengthen multi-cultural communities through inter-faith dialogue and collaboration. James Merlino, Minister assisting Premier John Brumby on Multicultural Affairs, and Member for Burwood, Bob Stensholt, presented the Victorian Sikh Association with the grant. “Victoria is the most multi-cultural, harmonious state in Australia and rivals any of the multicultural centres of the world,” Merlino said

NEW DELHI: A woman, who lost five of her family members in 1984 anti-Sikh riots, today claimed before a Delhi court trying Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and others that she did not go to the police station after the incident as policemen were among the rioters. “I did not want to go the police station because the police officials were among the rioters,” Jagdish Kaur told Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta.

Canadian Sikh Wins Discrimination Lawsuit Against Home Depot

TORONTO – A Canadian Sikh security guard in Toronto, who moved the Ontario provincial human rights commission for being forced to wear a hard helmet by Home Depot, has won his case against the world’s largest home-improvement retailer. In its ruling, Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal said Home Depot (Canada) discriminated against Deepinder Loomba by “enforcing” a hard hat on him and threatening him with dismissal if he didn’t comply. Headquartered near Atlanta in the US, Home Depot has about 180 stores across Canada.

Sikh centre given an award by the Queen

The Queen has recently given the Sikh Nishkam Centre in Birmingham an award for its exemplary voluntary services to society. The group running the centre is headed by “Bhai Sahib” Mohinder Singh, whom I previously discussed in the “Music of Unity/Politics of Division” article. Bhai Sahib is also the chairman of the British Sikh Consulative Forum (BSCF), and has been heavily involved in numerous charitable and humanitarian activities along with interfaith bridge-building efforts for many years.

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday framed charges of murder and rioting against senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and others in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in which six persons were killed in Sultanpuri in New Delhi. Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta, after finding prima facie evidence against the Congress leader and others, decided to record statements of witnesses from August 23. High security at Golden Temple for Bluestar anniv

Security has been tightened at the Golden temple here in view of the 26th anniversary of Operation Bluestar on Sunday. Policemen in plainclothes are also deputed outside the premises as a precautionary measure in view of expected presence of radical Sikh activists in the temple. The Sikh bodies, including SGPC and Akal Takht, observe the anniversary of Operation Bluestar every year.

1984: Order on framing of charges on July 1

A Delhi court has reserved its order on framing of charges against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and others in the Sultanpuri carnage that left six persons dead during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta, after hearing arguments both from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the accused on Saturday, said the court will pronounce its order on July 1. The CBI lawyer sought the prosecution of Kumar, a former Outer Delhi MP, and four others for murder, rioting and other offences under the IPC while the defence counsel requested discharge of the accused on the grounds of insufficient evidence

Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab), Jun 4 (PTI) A court here today acquitted a Sikh, whose name figured in the black list maintained by the centre for alleged anti-national activities during the dark days of terrorism in Punjab. Forty-year-old Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukhi Sumundari was aquitted by court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate here. Sukhi?s counsel told reporters outside the court premises that the court acquitted Sukhi as the prosecution had failed to prove charges against him

Enact Anand Marriage Act for Sikhs: SAD urges Centre

The Shiromani Akali Dal Core Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) called upon the Centre for an expeditious enactment of the Anand Marriage Act for Sikhs, along the lines of similar acts for other religions. Sources said the draft of this Act is ready for ratification by the Union Cabinet. After the clearance, it is likely to be introduced in the Parliament in the next session.

27 anti-Sikh riots accused acquitted in Bihar

PTI Patna: A local court has acquitted all the 27 accused involved in anti-Sikh riots of 1984 due to the absence of witnesses against them in Bihar’s Rohtas district. Additional district and sessions judge (III) Nand Kishore Sharma while acquitting the accusedearlier this week (May 31) for want of evidences also crticised the police machinery for its failure to produce the four witnesses in court, whose absence led the court to let off the accused.

New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI) A Delhi Court today issued notice to the CBI on a petition challenging an order of a lower court accepting the closure report in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler. Additional Sessions Judge V K Khanna sought a response from the probe agency by July 24 on the revision petition filed by riot victims. Lakhwinder Kaur, whose husband was killed in the riots, sought further investigation by the CBI into the case following claims about emergence of fresh evidence

Indian visa uproar prompts Canada to launch immigration-policy review

T he Harper government vowed to review its immigration rules after Canadian visa officers in India touched off a furor by barring dozens of people on the grounds that their service in army, police and intelligence units made them complicit in human-rights violations. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney issued an apology on Friday, saying Canadian immigration officials should never have cast aspersions on India’s institutions. The incidents, he said, showed visa officers have too much latitude.
