In the drab echoing halls where votes are counted, a hundred tiny moments cut through the muddle and tedium of the longest night and make you smile for democracy. Mine came in Richmond FE college sports hall, sometime after 5am.

Casting a vote is one of the most important things we do in a democracy. The Electoral Commission campaigned in the run-up to the election with the slogan “Make sure nothing stops you voting”. Hundreds of thousands of people — many young, first-time voters — registered to vote as a result.

Earlier this week, the New York Times ran a story about how the Vatican handled abuse claims against the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado, the founder of the worldwide order Legionnaires of Christ. The story, which focuses on Vatican politics, hasn’t gotten as much play as the previous Times story attempting to link Pope Benedict XVI to an abuse case in Wisconsin.

Why? ‘Zeal’ for living as a Muslim?

Anyone who knows anything about Islam knows that devout Muslim believers who practice their faith do not drink alcohol. It is not very hard to find this out, as this Google search shows ( Muslim beliefs on drinking alcohol ). That’s why I was rather surprised to read an interesting, but rather strange, detail in one of the many New York Times updates on the life of Faisal Shahzad and the various influences in his life that may, or may not, have led him to attempt an act of terrorism in Times Square
