Librarian Loses Suit Claiming University Was Hostile To His Christian Beliefs

Today’s Columbus (OH) Dispatch reports that a librarian at the Mansfield campus of Ohio State University has lost his federal lawsuit in which he claimed that the University as “an aggressive proponent of the homosexual lifestyle” is “a naturally hostile environment to the expression of traditional Christian beliefs and morality.” Savage v. Gee , (SD OH, June 7, 2010), involved an escalating series of charges and counter charges between librarian Scott Savage and various faculty members, all growing out of Savage’s suggestion of the book The Marketing of Evil as possible assigned reading for all entering freshmen.

Gores’ divorce raise questions about what makes a good marriage

Tipper and then-Vice President Al Gore celebrate their 29th wedding anniversary in 1999. The couple is divorcing. “So, how’s your marriage?” My mother posed the question over a manicure a few weeks ago, in that nonchalant yet quizzical tone parents perfect over the years

Is Divorce Really the Answer? — Part 2

In last week’s post , I shared a list of lies and false beliefs from Nancy Leigh DeMoss’ book, Lies Women Believe . The second part of her book title is, “And the Truth That Sets Them Free.” Today I want to share the list of truths she counters those lies with. There is no marriage God cannot heal.

Food companies target kids through online games

UC Davis researchers have found that companies are using a new medium to peddle fattening, sugary foods to children. Online “advergames” – a blend of interactive animation, video content and advertising – are being used to promote corporate branding and products, particularly high-fat, high-sugar foods, according to public health researchers. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.

Carolyn Hax: Husband’s fame stands between wife and a good marriage

DEAR CAROLYN: My husband is a local celebrity chef who gained notoriety during our first four years of marriage. This created some conflict with “foodie groupies,” and my husband’s inability to lay down boundaries when they hug, kiss, or hit on him at local events.

Teen Talk: Boyfriend’s deception is reason enough to end it

DEAR KELLY: I recently found out that my boyfriend (of 8 months) has two Facebook accounts. One account that I can see says that he is in a relationship with me and posts things about how in love with me he is, but on the other account, he lists himself as single and looking to meet new people for “friendship and more.” Only his best friends (all guys) knew about the second account. One of my friends came upon his second account and showed me

Crocker to close doors for a time, but its events still fill art calendar

Sign installers Tom May, left, and Marc Busby practice their craft at the Crocker Art Museum in February. For four months starting today, the Crocker Art Museum will be closed to the public – perhaps only the second long closure in its 125-year history. But it will continue to be an active presence in the interim.

Weekend Devo — God’s Love

I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. — John 14:30-31 This verse was part of my Bible reading yesterday, and I found myself lingering over verse 31

Is Divorce Really the Answer?

“No sooner does a couple say, “I do,” than the Serpent rears his ugly head and sets out to destroy that marriage. He knows every divorce is an attack on the character of God and on the earthly picture of divine redemption. Before the wedding reception is over, Satan is looking for opportunities to plant seeds of deception in the hearts of the newlyweds.” —Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Lies Women Believe (p.

Whether you agree with why our troops are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other parts of the world, let’s take a moment and pray for these brave men and women serving our country in often brutal conditions. They are answering the call and being obedient, even if they don’t completely understand why

Friendship with a Jealous God

For thou shalt worship no other god:   for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.  Exodus 34:14  Names mean something, especially in the Kingdom of God. As you read through God’s Word, notice how often we are told the meaning behind the different names people give to their children. God even tells the parents in some instances what they are to name their children

Pizza-tossing skills a bit flat

During the drive to Medina, I was humming Mambo Italiano, from the Visa commercial of the man tossing pizzas. In truth, it started hours before I got in the car. It started the minute I got out of bed that morning when I knew I was going to get a lesson in pizza-dough tossing from Sean Brauser, founder of the Romeo’s Pizza chain.

John Rosemond: Human nature isn’t set in stone

Over the past 40 years or so, child advocates have given a good amount of lip service to the view that adults, especially educators, should respect children’s ”individual differences.” In theory, this recognizes the fact that every trait is distributed in the general population in a manner represented by the bell-shaped curve. Whether the issue is general intelligence, sociability, optimism, musical aptitude, artistic ability or mechanical skill (to mention but a few), relatively few people are ”gifted” and relatively few people are disadvantaged

You don’t look a day over 50

The birth control pill turned 50 this year. Time magazine celebrated the anniversary with a 5,000-word look at the sociological history of its development and use. And I have to say that while the piece reads a bit like a love letter to 1960s feminism, author Nancy Gibbs discussed religion and values throughout the piece

E-cards proliferate — but is it OK to send one to Mom?

“When you care enough to hit ‘Send.’ ” Even if you forget Mother’s Day until it’s actually Mother’s Day, you still can send her a card that will arrive on time. You just can’t expect your last-minute gesture to provoke that tender emotion known as the “Hallmark moment.” Electronic greetings cards, or e-cards, are a growing presence on the Internet, but they still generate only a fraction of the traffic of paper cards.
