Oh sister, have I misjudged beauty queens

I have a knee-jerk reaction to beauty pageants. Even the words “beauty pageants” bring me out in hives. The idea of young women parading about in swimming costumes or “evening gowns” and then being marked – usually by considerably older men – on their appearance seems to me simply Not Right

Preaching at the Haitian Church

Last night I was given the honor of preaching the message at our Haitian Church’s revival service.  For this week’s revival meetings, the Haitian Church has been meeting in our Worship Center.  Though the building is First Baptist Church’s, we were the guests last night. We talk of going overseas on international mission trips and how to engage different cultures, but last night reminded me that international ministry is available right here at home.  Of course, I knew this, but it’s good to ha

Cult leader Alan Bushey sentenced in corpse case

A judge sentenced the leader of a religious sect to 2 years in prison Wednesday for hiding an elderly follower’s rotting body on a toilet for weeks. Prosecutors said Bushey kept the body hidden so he could collect Middlesworth’s Social Security checks and annuities. Bushey’s attorney, Thomas Steinman, argued that Bushey thought God would bring Middlesworth back to life.

The Journal of Mormon History, Spring 2009 (35:2), Part 1

The most recent issue of the Journal of Mormon History actually arrived a little while back, but I’ve been slow to post this.  Since the next will be here soon, I’d better get this out! I’ll be more prompt next time! First, the JMH has published Philip Jenkins’ 2008 Tanner Lecture entitled “Letting Go: Understanding Mormon Growth in Africa.” Jenkins observes of Christian (Catholic, Protestant, etc.) growth in Africa, “Missions in Africa are rather like gardening in Florida: Plant some seeds

Peace, Love, and Mortar – Recording Artist Ed Hale Releases Tour Schedule Blazing a Refreshingly New Non-Traditional Approach

“With a new solo album in stores and spinning on the radio from coast to coast, Transcendence singer-guitarist Ed Hale will jet from Vancouver, British Columbia to his hometown of New York City for a day, then on to Cartagena, Colombia in South America, then Sao Paulo, Brazil, and then of all places Lahore, Pakistan for three days before returning home for what one assumes will be some much needed sleep.” Recording and promoting a new album in the music world of today is a cookie-cutter proces

Obeying God In Marriage & When Considering Marriage

Acts 5:25-29,  “Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with

Grace in Anaheim: Episcopal Church votes to bless same-gender unions

Grace Aheron is an occasional contributor to SCH and a recent honor graduate of Patrick Henry High School .  She is also a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Roanoke. Grace sent us a text in all caps and with a boatload of exclamation points.  “It passed,” Grace exclaimed.  The “It” was the resolution before the House of Bishops at the Episcopal Church’s General Convention this year.

Bruce Wilson: Palin Attended Church Event With Samurai Sword Ceremony

On June 7th, 2008 Sarah Palin interrupted her schedule of state business and spent Alaska state taxpayer money to fly down from Juneau to the Mat-Su Valley where she attended on June 8th two religious events dominated by the Wasilla Assembly of God, which is demonstrably Palin’s key Alaska church. At the end of one those events, young adults in a church Palin had attended for over two decades were presented with Samurai swords. “Warriors of old were considered undressed if they were without

Woman ‘married’ to evangelist Tony Alamo at age 8 to retake stand

A woman who said evangelist Tony Alamo “married” her at age 8 told federal jurors Thursday that he sexually assaulted her repeatedly until she escaped his compound in late 2006. Another woman who noted in her Bible the first time she had sex with evangelist Tony Alamo — at age 14 — told jurors in his sex-crimes trial Thursday that she was married to the flamboyant pastor that year in a prison visiting room

Baptists planting roots in Balmer?

I’ll admit right up front that my eyebrows arched way up when I saw that my local newspaper — that would be the Baltimore Sun — had published an A1 news feature on efforts by the Southern Baptist Convention to plant a circle of new churches in and around this unique urban environment that some call Charm City . I mean, the Sun has often struggled to get its religion-news act together on stories about Catholic events and trends , here in the heart of a heavily Catholic state called Maryland (yes, I know the origins of the state’s name).

PoI with Dale McGowan

Whether you’re a parent, a prospective parent, or just someone who enjoys giving unsolicited advice to parents, I strongly recommend the recent Point of Inquiry podcast featuring Dale McGowan , the author of the excellent Parenting Beyond Belief and the more recent and equally excellent-sounding Raising Freethinkers: A Practical Guide for Parenting Beyond Belief . The discussion with DJ Grothe is full of good sense for anyone who cares to raise children to become independent and inquisitive-minded adults

A Glimpse of Main Stage: Looking Back on Last Night

5,200 CHIC participants filled the University of Tennessee’s Thompson Boling Arena last night for the first Main Stage service of the week here at CHIC 2009.  Jumbo screens assisted in getting participants excited for the start of Main Stage as they counted down the minutes and seconds until 8:30 when the service began.  Aside from the awesome worship experience, led by Matt Lundgren and the CHIC band, one of the many highlights of the opening service was the emergence of two drummers from a wal

“Stalin”-ist bureaucrats terrorize Los Angeles’ businesses, chase them out of town

Rick Newcombe, president of Creators Syndicate, wrote Friday in the Wall Street Journal about the arbitrary “banana republic”-style “apparatchiks” in the Los Angeles bureaucracy who have thrown the rule of law out the window in their attempt to bring in as much tax revenue as possible. It’s further evidence of the moral, economic and security threat that exists when civil government is too large and has grown beyond its lawful jurisdiction.

House Climate Change Bill Includes Provisions Of Interest

On June 26, the U.S. House of Representatives passed and sent to the Senate the massive American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (HR 2454). Several provisions in the climate bill are of interest to followers of church-state issues: Section 202 includes faith institutions and other non-profits in the group of nonresidential buildings that are eligible for assistance in retrofitting to achieve energy efficiency and improvements in water use

Pro-Israel Lobby Alarmed by Growth of Boycott, Divestment Movement

Art Young is a member of the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid in Toronto.  He has sent me this article which looks at how friends of the Israeli state are starting to get worried by the boycott movement. It’s rather longer than a normal post on this site which is why I’ve split it. The movement to call Israel to account for its crimes against the Palestinian people is growing, it is “invading the mainstream discourse, becoming part of the constant and unrelenting drumbeat against Israel.”

The Prophecy Of The Popes By St. Malachi and the 72nd Day

FROM THE CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA, 1913 Edition: “ The most famous and best known prophecies about the popes are those attributed to St. Malachy. In 1139 he went to Rome to give an account of the affairs of his diocese to the pope, Innocent II, who promised him two palliums for the metropolitan Sees of Armagh and Cashel.” At The Catholic-Pages Website , a chart is given listing the names and descriptions of the Popes according to the prophecy of St.

This Weekend @ The Gathering: Where Does The Flow Go?

This weekend @ The Gathering we will conclude our series, “Generous Wins.” We’ve been talking these past several weeks about the who, why, what, and how of money.  We’ve been learning how to live in the flow.  Hopefully by now you know the difference between a source and a resource; that a job is a resource, an income is a resource, the company for which you work, the customers you serve are resources.  They are many and varied, and will change over time.  But we have one source that neve

Sometimes you just need to write

We had a great trip to Costa Rica and I will share more about that soon, but I just need a safe place to write now.  J has been out of work since early March.  He closed his law firm after about 4 months of slowly shutting down, not taking new clients, etc.  It was deliberate.  We were both OK with it.  He planned to take a break for a bit and then get a new job pretty soon, figuring that it wouldn’t be too tough as a lawyer with 6 years of experience and as a small-business owner.
