August 19, 2009 in Uncategorized I’ve been quite swamped lately. Summer is supposed to be a slow, relaxed time. But I find that that thought only serves to deceive me and make me mad that life didn’t slow down as I had assumed it would. I’m very involved at church right now.I lead an adult growth group that studies the Redemption Story. We are reading through the Bible and seeing God’s redemptive plan throughout. We have already read through Genesis and we are now on Exodus. That is time c

Remember: A Seminary Education is a Terrible Thing to Waste. This is our take on David Brown’s popular post “How to Waste Your Theological Education”.This is great refresher for those already out of seminary and serving (or seeking to serve) at a church or other type of ministry. But even more so it is a lighthouse to guide seminarians through the difficult waters of seminary. As 2 Timothy 2:24 says “be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful”, especially when others don’t see things your w

In United States v. Hovind , (ND FL, July 29, 2009), a Florida federal district court permitted the federal government to move ahead with its criminal forfeiture of properties that make up Dinosaur Adventure Land (as well as related bank accounts) to cover back taxes of Christian evangelist Kent Hovind. Hovind is serving a 10 year prison sentence for failing to deduct payroll taxes for the employees of his Creation Science Evangelism organization.

Scratch a right-wing argument against publicly-funded health care and it gives off a distinctive smell, namely: 1) It is rare to encounter a right-wing argument against what they label “socialized” health care that doesn’t translate, term for term, into an equally valid argument against privately-funded health insurance. Very nearly everything they rage against in the prospect of tax-funded health care happens as a matter of daily routine among private insurers and those they insure. 2) It is even rarer — indeed, I would say rare to the point of non-existent — to encounter a right-wing argument against what they label “socialized” health care that doesn’t translate, term for term, into an equally valid argument against the Veteran’s Administration, Medicare, and Medicaid.

When you are dealing with a really talented report, one who really knows how to listen and tell the stories of real people, religion can show up in the most unusual and touching places. Veteran Washington Post foreign correspondent Pamela Constable is one of the best and, clearly, she gets religion — in a wide variety of cultures. She has even written a book on that, “ Fragments of Grace : My Search for Meaning in the Strife of South Asia.” I should be honest and admit that Constable has spoken to my students before on Capital Hill, when stateside, and I sure hope that she can do that again.

When I die, and if I have to arrange it myself, I will consult nobody, and do it unassisted if I can. I entertain not a flicker of moral or practical doubt on the subject, and never have. Speaking only for myself — in such matters one should never judge for others — if Nature does not do the job in a timely manner I shall consider it a duty to take matters into my own hands

Thanks to the slightly creepy magic of Google Street View , the Fireshot add-on to Firefox, and my middling graphic editing skillz, I have managed to cobble together an annotated visual of last Thursday’s bike calamity . Click the image to embiggen it, as SJKP likes to say. A note on the directions indicated in the image: camera’s eye view here faces more or less due east down Burnside Street.

John Turner Laboring under the misapprehension that political bodies listen to the opinions of mainline Protestant denominations (we didn’t even have a label for mainline Protestantism on this blog), the Episocopal Church recently repudiated the centuries-old belief that God gave Christian Europeans the right to wrest land away from benighted natives. A friend forwarded me an article from Indian Country Today celebrating the resolution, which calls for the overturning of an 1823 Supreme Court decision (Johnson v

If you thought R&B artist Chris Brown’s career would be hurt by viciously beating his girlfriend Rihanna and threatening to kill her, you would be wrong. by Nontando Hadebe07-27-2009 The government of Zimbabwe, in a groundbreaking move, dedicated this past weekend to renouncing political violence and promoting national healing.
