WordCamps are informal, community-organized events that are put together by WordPress users.

Reflections on sexism in Confucian Thought.mov

Here’s some thoughts on the discussions that we’ve been having around the idea of sexism in Confucian thought specifically & Chinese thought in general. Really, it involves a bit of discussion about gender as well.

BloggersUnite for Haiti: Cash Needed For Relief Efforts

From what I’ve read throughout the day cash is desperately needed by the aid organizations heading up relief efforts in Haiti after the devastating earthquake that rocked the small island nation. This cash will be used for everything from medical supplies to food. I found a list of reputable organizations that are taking donations on a Fox news site: -The Red Cross is asking the public to make financial donations to the International Relief Fund by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or online at http://www.redcross.org -Donors may also text “HAITI” to “90999″ and a donation of $10 will be given to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts.

Donate Your Fashion

In the light of the recent allegations that well-known and established retailers H&M and Wal-Mart purposely destroyed and disposed of apparel rather than donating it to homeless shelters or any other nonprofit charity, it’s time that all Americans reflect upon their own personal choices on what to do with used items they no longer want. If you still haven’t heard about these atrocious actions, read RIMTailing’s blog post on Aim to Donate, Not Destroy, Merchandise and The Thrifty Chicks’ Why are two major retailers torturing their own trash? Not only should American consumers evaluate their personal decisions on donating or disposing based on whether or not someone in need may benefit from such a donation, but they should also consider the ecological impact of such a disposal.

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday: I Got A Turtle Head Poking Out!

Here is a little of what Photographer Dan Bodenstein writes about the photo’s subject, Eartha the sea turtle : I visited Eartha at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach Florida. Eartha was very photogenic. She would swim right up to the glass in her tank as I positioned myself infront of it for a photograph

Boomers Increase Presence on Facebook, In Blogosphere

In some recent discussions I have had, I have noticed an opinion–mainly amongst non-bloggers and non-Facebookers–that these digital realms are dominated by young people. While this is not a total misconception, it is also not entirely true. Take a look at Facebook’s user statistics from the past year or so, and you’ll see that while the largest percentage of the participants are younger than Boomers, users over 45 are steadily making up a larger percentage of their overall users.

It’s Christmas time and that means bloggers are putting up Christmas-themed posts. We asked Austin to go through BlogCatalog and find some “recommended reading” for the holiday season. Here’s what he came up with: And So This Is Christmas: Christmas means different things to everyone.

Even Fish Use Twitter

This week, @TonyBerkman and @AngieAlaniz are out of the office and that means Rocky and Ariela, the office pugs, are gone too. While the office isn’t quite the same without our trusty pugs–it is quieter and smells a whole lot better–it does give us a chance to appreciate a new addition to the BlogCatalog office. Tom Wilkinfish is a little fish in a little bowl, and he is often overlooked by everyone other than his friend and caretaker, @ithinkdancan

Update Your Status on Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin with One Application

Sometimes it can be cumbersome to update your status on Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin by having to visit the individual sites. Your readers want to stay connected to you in various ways and some prefer different outlets.  You have to make sure that if you create a social media stream for your users to follow you, then you need to continue to use it so you don’t lose your reader’s interest. I am a part-time blogger since I am also a full-time stay at home mom and involved in various organizations.  Even though I am considered a “stay at home mom,” it seems like we are never at home!  So staying connected in different outlets took a lot effort, but not any longer with HootSuite .

Bloggers Unite Against Hunger Through The Brown Bag Project

As Thanksgiving approaches and we begin to focus our attention on buying and preparing dish after dish for our holiday feasts, it becomes more apparent than ever that there are many people in our communities that will be going without a Thanksgiving meal this year. In fact, many of these people often go without meals for themselves and their children and some struggle daily with hunger.

Osho – Tao: The Pathless Path

Following a recommendation on the New Taoist Community forum I bought a copy of Osho’s book Tao: The Pathless Path My understanding is that the book has been created by collecting together the transcripts of several talks given by him. The book takes several of the parables of Lieh-tzu – the third of the trio of great Taoist philosophers alongside Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu. Osho then discusses the meaning of the parable and explores its subtleties.

Video on Blogs: The Next Big Thing?

A notion that I have heard repeated at conferences and in discussions is that video, which is already prevalent in the world of social networks, will be the next big thing in the world of blogging. Yet, when I spend time searching out and reading blogs, I find that most of the time I don’t see any video being used. When there is video, a lot of it is just clips embedded from YouTube rather than original content produced by the blogger.
