More than a century ago, when Fifth Avenue was lined with mansions, its houses of worship were built, supported and populated by Vanderbilts, Astors and Belmonts. It was, in the words of the late Kate Simon, “a village of the greatest wealth and financial power in the world, the might reflected … by the companion churches,” in her 1978 book, “Fifth Avenue: A Very Social History.”

Relief groups mourn their losses in Haiti

Two United Methodist Church executives, a Lutheran seminarian and three missionaries of the Free Methodist Church died as a result of the massive earthquake. Other religious organizations are still awaiting word about whether staffers and their family members are alive and safe.

I was reflecting on the fact that the Christmas season is over and we are now in Ordinary Time in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. Although “ordinary” in this context doesn’t mean usual or average, so much as it means not-seasonal, there is some value in keeping in mind our usual understanding of the world

Malaysian police Wednesday announced the arrest of eight Muslim men who allegedly attacked a Christian church with a firebomb — the first suspects in a spate of assaults on churches after a court ruled that non-Muslims could use the word “Allah” to refer to God.

Over 40 Killed After Muslims Attack Nigeria Church

Over 40 people have been killed in the Nigerian city of Jos in the country’s Plateau State, after around 200 Muslim youths attacked Christians near a Catholic Church sparking retaliatory violence, Christian rights investigators said Monday, January 18.
