There is a church in town that has a huge sign out front the says, “Perfect People Not Allowed”. John Burk’s book has come to Brazil as well – WhenI first read it I thought, cool, they are trying to fight against religion and declaring the Gospel call to “come and dine”. But, as I thought much more about Jesus and the early church and the radical call to a righteousness far greater than that of the pharisees I have to consider holding on to the ideia that the culture of christian community

Over the years I have been part of churches where there have been specific individuals who (a) have, as far as I can judge these things, a genuine faith in Christ. (b) ought not to be left alone with children, as this puts the children at risk.So you need the staff team and other congregational lay leaders to be vigilant, you need to lay down rules with the individual concerned, and you need to police those rules and review them regularly in a way that doesn’t draw unnecessary attention to the p

If you were looking for cutting-edge discussions of gay theology back in the 1980s, all you had to do was head on over to the Iliff School of Theology , the United Methodist campus attached to the University of Denver. As one former faculty member of the university once told me, Iliff in that era was “the most liberal institution in American that still called itself Christian.” One of the strengths of an openly liberal institution is that it’s a great place to learn that not all liberals think alike. True, it was hard to find anyone at Iliff who believed that the Resurrection was a actual event in history, as opposed to a concept in the hearts and minds of early Christians, but it was easy to find people with different liberal views on other issues.

Lelilani Avril turned two years old this month! Lolo & Lola brought a shiny red Radio Flyer tricycle. Life has been busy and fun these last several weeks… although I must confess that I have really missed writing here in my blog. My schedule has kept me away, as I have traveled nearly 5,000 miles since my last post–working hard to put together my leadership teams in all four corners of the state for this great church planting effort I am directing over the next year. Lutherans Lift Barrier for Gay Clergy — LATimes.com An insightful quote from the article: “The resolutions drew tearful testimony from supporters and opponents, both of whom cited the Bible in their arguments.” Another tragic victim of Sola Scriptura in Protestantism; Lord have mercy! May the Holy Spirit lead the faithful in these heretical sects to embrace the Truth of Christ found in His One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church — refusing to hold the traditions of men above

This is from the same organization which was responsible for packing Sherrod Brown’s sham town hall at OSU with union goons and leftist crazies. Who wants to go? Join us for a candlelight vigil and peaceful procession from one downtown Columbus church to another as we “Shine Our Light on Health Care.” This event will be an opportunity to reflect on the spiritual roots of our work to support health care reform – highlighting the moral aspects of the issue, and remembering the real-life cons

Archaeologists working on a dig at the ruined Romanesque Cathédrale Sainte-Marie on the summit of Nice’s colline du Château in June-July this year have discovered what remains of a palaeo-Christian basilica underneath the cathedral. Ceramic shards from the period enabled experts to date the latter building to the Vth century AD. Aside from the foundatins, little remains of the original basilica – due to the fact that later builders working on such sites always recycled stones from the original

There is a reason the fake health care debate has been the biggest event in America since we interned Japanese humans. There is a reason Obama’s team chose to “tackle” health care reform instead of prosecutions and tribunals. Everyone’s in on it, and none of the involved are very interested in hanging themselves.Your mission for today is to ignore the health care scare. What will happen to it has nothing to do with what you want and everything to do with who profits the most.Instead, fire up yo

I just finished reading A Lover’s Quarrel with the Evangelical Church which I got courtesy of The Ooze Viralbloggers. As Dr. Alex McFarland has said, “This book is for all who are broken over the fact that our nation is spiritually bankrupt, despite a well funded American Christian industry and thousands of Dolby-surround-sound-equipped churches. In his insightful critique of the evangelical movement and its excesses the book’s author, Warren Cole Smith, takes on such topics as “The Evangelical

By PATRICK CONDON, Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS — Even though the Rev. Mark Chavez believes the leaders of his church made a decision in direct contradiction of the Bible by lifting a ban on sexually active, monogamous gays and lesbians as clergy, he said he’s staying with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. “I’m not leaving,” Chavez said Friday night, promising an effort to keep the church moving even further toward what he sees as an embrace of behavior condemned by Scripture.

A Republican candidate for the 47th District in Virginia’s House of Delegates is taking a stand that may surprise some members of his party: A candidate for office in Arlington who wants to get rid of the state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, eliminate the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and allow the county government to give domestic-partner benefits to unmarried members of the government workforce? Sounds like it’s pretty standard stuff for a Democrat. But comi

Fair and balanced — that doesn’t apply to the Democrat and Chronicle. Did you see Jill Terri’s front page story in yesterday’s paper criticizing Maggie Brooks for questioning the wisdom of New York State handing out $200 for “school supplies”? She really went out of her way to do a balanced story. She talked to several recipients who said they needed the money. Then she talked to an African-American minister who said the money came in handy.

For many parents contemplating a divorce or dissolution of their marriage, a primary concern is which parent shall have “custody” of the child or children of the marriage. I shall begin the article by addressing the differences between the two parenting systems in Ohio – “sole custody” and “shared parenting”. The parents have different names or titles: In a situation where one parent has “sole custody” of the child/children, that parent is designated as the “residential parent and legal cus

After much deliberation, we decided to go on our whale watching tour with Freedom III , a reasonably new vessel that is already fast gaining a reputation as the best in the fleet of whale watching tours on offer. We were attracted by the extra time they offered out with the whales, the more personalised, smaller group they take and the great reviews we’d heard about the food! And we were not disappointed. I’ve always wanted to go whale watching so this was quite an exciting day for me. A

In the years after my conversion I had the tremendous privilege of being taught early the great doctrines of the faith. Doctrines, precepts and Bible truth that an average church goer today would not know until, by God’s providence, learns of it late in life. These truths have been a great comfort to me. I have learned early on that promises of Scripture can do little if those promises are not realized to be found on the foundation of the truth of Scripture, the nature of God, the eternal holine

When I was growing up I lived a few doors down from a very observant Catholic family that had strong opinions about what is right and what is wrong. There was a son around my age, who I liked to play with now and then, but his parents eventually banned me from fraternizing with him. The reason was that, after being warned by his parents a few times not to do so, I forgot and shouted “Jesus Christ!” during some play episode. The first time I had done this, I had received a very stern lecture a

The continual scorched earth policy used on President Obama continues. In a phone conference with multi-denominational religious leaders Mr. Obama told listeners: “I know there’s been a lot of misinformation in this debate, and there are some folks out there who are frankly bearing false witness … [F]abrications…have been put out there to stop people from meeting a core moral and ethical obligation that we look out for one another … that I am my brother’s keeper, my sister’s keeper, an

Lately I’ve been really engaged by a few people who’ve been working out what a missional hermeneutic (ie reading the bible through the lens of mission) would look like. They are: Michael J. Gorman in his recent series of posts on “ Missional Hermeneutics ” at his blogsite; Joel Greens thoughts in his book “ Seized by Truth: Reading the Bible as Scripture ” regarding the connection of the formation of the church with her reading of Scripture; Christopher J Wright’s thoughts in his book “The Miss

“this call from many different denominations and faiths” “bearing false witness” “I want to repeat it so that every member of your congregations understands” “core ethical and moral obligation” “I am my brother’s keeper and my sister’s keeper” “speak the truth”. “Time and again, men and women of faith have helped to show us what’s possible when we’re guided by our hopes and not our fears” “the way that our religious faith instructs us” “God bless you.” These are phrases you might expect to hear in a church service, however these were the troubling words spoken by President Obama in his address ” 40 Minutes for Health Reform .” They are troubling not because a US President spoke them, nor because they were used to push for health care reform. What troubles me is the US President who spoke them when speaking to a group of Christians for health care reform

Image via Wikipedia I’ve been reading a lot of blogs the past few days, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have been a major topic of discussion. This is because the ELCA has been holding their Church-Wide Assembly this week, and the church’s response to GLBT people in various circumstances has been a huge topic of conversation. They’ve voted on a statement on Human Sexuality (of which GLBT issues is only a small portion), a policy of allowing local congregations to minis
