Here we are in 2010, and as we watch the Catholic Church implode, let us spare a thought for those sheeple placing their shekels in the collection plates each week knowing that the group they have financially supported has covered up child rape and other forms of paedophilic abuse. The Pope will visit London in the Autumn and he expects to be greeted by a loud group of protestors who have enough of this charade, this parade of nonsense.

The Virginia Supreme Court said the Circuit Court erred in the matter of the dispute between the Diocese of Virginia and The Episcopal Church vs. CANA, and required the Circuit Court “conduct further proceeding thereon consistent with the views expressed in this opinion.” So it is back to the lower court Here is what the last two paragraphs of the judgment say: “In light of our holding that the circuit court erred in granting the Code § 57-9(A) petitions, the control and ownership of the property held in trust and used by the CANA Congregations remains unresolved. Accordingly, the declaratory judgment actions filed by TEC and the Diocese, and the counterclaims of the CANA Congregations in response to those suits, must be revived in order to resolve this dispute under principles of real property and contract law.” “CONCLUSION For these reasons, we will reverse the judgment of the circuit court and remand with direction to dismiss the CANA Congregations’ Code § 57-9(A) petitions

Thielicke, speak to us about Spurgeon . . . For Spurgeon the really determinative foundation of the education of preachers was naturally this work on the spiritual man. The education of preachers must not be directly pragmatic; it must not be immediately directed to preaching as its goal. Otherwise the process of education becomes an act of mere training, the teaching of technical skills. The preacher must read the Bible without asking in the back of his mind how he can capitalize homiletically upon the text he studies. He must first read it as nourishment for his own soul

Some more of Thielicke on Spurgeon: When Spurgeon speaks, it is as if the figures of the patriarchs and prophets and apostles were in the auditorium – sitting upon a raised tribune! – looking down upon the listeners. You hear the rush of the Jordan and the murmuring of the brooks of Siloam; you see the cedars of Lebanon swaying in the wind, hear the clash and tumult of battle between the children of Israel and the Philistines, sense the safety and security of Noah’s ark, suffer the agonies of soul endured by Job and Jeremiah, hear the creak of oars as the disciples strain against the contrary winds, and feel the dread of the terrors of the apocalypse. The Bible is so close that you not only hear its messages but breathe its very atmosphere. The heart is so full of Scripture that it leavens the consciousness, peoples the imagination with its images, and determines the landscape of the soul by its climate. And because it has what might be called a total presence, the Bible as the Word of God is really concentrated life that enters every pore and teaches us not only to see and hear but also to taste and smell the wealth of reality that is spread out before us here. Those who listened to these lectures of Spurgeon lived . .

I picked up a copy of Helmut Thielicke’s Encounter with Spurgeon . Essentially it is a 45 page reflection on Spurgeon’s homiletics by a theologian you might not expect to rave so wildly about his work and ministry, followed by selected highlights from Spurgeon’s writings. I have not read Thielicke since studying ethics at seminary, but I will have to be disciplined not to just copy most of the 45 pages here in the next few days! However, I do think this can be a Thielicke on Spurgeon week as far as this blog is concerned.

The banner for PRELUDIUM has been for the past while this quote from William Stringfellow : “The practice of the Christian life consists of the discernment of, and reliance upon, and the celebration of the presence of the Word of God in the common life of the world.” I’ve been reading a biography of Bede Griffiths today and thinking about the Vedanta understanding and use of holy scripture and the high sense of “the Word” as being both about the Creator, the whole of Creation as a “book” whose story peaks in the coming of the Christ, physical and cosmic, and the Spirit of Truth that flows from the scripture and informs both the understanding of Creator, Christ and Spirit. It was an afternoon with few words and time to listen to them as they worked together for my soul’s health.

Ephraim Radner is writing a good bit these days, sometimes for editors who take some considerable joy in giving his essays provocative titles, as in the Living Church’s latest posting of his essay titled, “Actions Now Have Consequences.” TLC seems to take some glee in the fact that actions have consequences, but does not seem to think that this has always been the case. But dear friends, actions always have consequences, and we all know that. The snotty title is just that, a poke in the eye

This is not a complete post, but it may be helpful. I received the following question from a good friend: I have been asked to preach on psalm 22 and am at the moment soaking myself in it to try and make sure I understand the message, the structure and what God was saying then and is saying now.

The nineteenth century South saw the rise of Old Landmarkism , a controversial group of Baptists who asked the right questions at the wrong time and influenced Southern Baptist life up to today in many churches. The term Landmarkism is derived from their battle cry, Proverbs 28:22; 23:10, “Remove not the ancient landmark which thy fathers have set.” The forced organization and centralization of the missionary movement in the South into two Boards along with Baptists’ flexible polity of local church autonomy led to questions from well-meaning Baptist leaders about the doctrine of the church. Biblically, they asked, what is a true church?

In the post-War swirl of nineteenth century America, with the rise of the corporation, industrialization, dislocation of families, large numbers of immigrants, the theory of evolution, and technological advancements, the religious thought of Americans was undergoing profound challenges. Those who accommodated themselves to evolution and utilitarian philosophy of science found themselves among the rise of religious liberalism. Because these philosophies remove Deity from their worldview and replace it with naturalism, religious liberals consequently had a high view of humanity and believed, because of the new evolutionary model, that given enough time and resources, we can solve all our own problems without God, producing ourselves a better creation and a better humanity.

Throughout Scripture God is seen as sovereign and providentially involved in all aspects of life. When there were natural disasters in Israel, the prophets called the people to respond to the God who created everything. When war or famine hit, they interpreted it in light of the covenant they were under, but also always recognizing and promoting the reality of a God who is present and immanent and involved. Today we see two concerning alternatives: Alternative A – God is Absent

Wednesday June 2nd was amazingly informative about the state of affairs in the Anglican Communion. The Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, Bishop Katharine, wrote a pastoral letter that was graceful, theologically sound and clear in its implications for the life of The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. The Archbishop of Canterbury wrote Pentecost Letter, in which he either suggests or by right as appointing officer orders that members of The Episcopal Church serving on ecumenical dialogue groups for the Anglican Communion withdraw from full membership.

It’s time again for me to dive into the old Armstrongist material from days long gone and pluck out some choice quotes for you. Today we will answer what a “generation” is according to Herbert Armstrong’s reckoning of time, and we’ll add more fuel to the fact that the much-hyped “prophetic understanding” was no understanding at all. “Only the Church of God has the Key of David which is the understanding of where Israel is today – Rev.

Phillips Brooks once famously defined preaching as “Truth through personality.” Today the word “personality” is sometimes used in a more restrictive sense to refer to the quirks of an individual. “Oh, that’s just his personality” we sometimes say. Now when it comes to preaching, there is a potential tension that can surface
