That Sinking Feeling

This is the kind of thing that’s elevating hope’s audaciousness to new heights : In documents released Wednesday, the national oil spill commission reveals that in late April or early May the White House budget office denied a request from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to make public the worst-case discharge from the blown-out well.

Just When You Thought It Was Orange

I am with John Carter Wood , who is with Anne Applebaum on this one: Speaking as an American who lives in Europe, I feel it is incumbent upon me to describe what people like me do when we hear warnings like the one issued on Sunday by the U.S. State Department and cited above: We do nothing

Frontiers in Creative Destruction

The noble struggle against the perils of socialism has reached a new zenith in Obion County, Tennessee: In this rural section of Tennessee, Gene Cranick’s home caught on fire. As the Cranicks fled their home, their neighbors alerted the county’s firefighters, who soon arrived at the scene. Yet when the firefighters arrived, they refused to put out the fire, saying that the family failed to pay the annual subscription fee to the fire department.

Outpost from the Enthusiasm Gap

I don’t speak for all liberals, much less for all Democrats, but I can say that my share of the so-called “enthusiasm gap” will not be closed by hectoring . Emotional states arise from circumstances and perceptions, not verbal demands to inhabit the emotional states. Worse, hectoring gives rise to annoyance, exasperation, and eventually anger, all of which are miles away from enthusiasm

Barack Obama does understand we all chose Christ, right?

Once upon a time there was a man named Jesus who came to this jacked-up place to sacrifice his life for mankind. You see, his Daddy determined a perfect sacrifice is what was necessary to redeem the lives of the rest of us

E =What Now?

It has been quite a while since I checked on Conservapedia, the preferred online reference for knuckle-draggers who can still thumb their way to a web site. I am here to report that at the possible peril of the methinks-the-site-doth-protest-too-much obsession with homosexuality, Conservapedia has recently taken to condemning modern physics : It says: “The theory of relativity is a mathematical system that allows no exceptions. It is heavily promoted by liberals who like its encouragement of relativism and its tendency to mislead people in how they view the world.” In a footnote, this comment is followed up by: “Virtually no one who is taught and believes relativity continues to read the Bible, a book that outsells New York Times bestsellers by a hundred-fold.” The finer points of the theory of relativity elude me, but I feel confident in saying it doesn’t depend on drawing more readers than the Bible, nor on drawing readers away from the Bible and toward New York Times bestsellers

To Bartleby the Driller: No

For a clear illustration that the right answer is often the simplest, look here : The Obama administration announced Monday it is requiring environmental reviews for all new deepwater oil drilling. That means an end, at least for now, to the kind of exemptions that allowed BP to drill its blown-out well in the Gulf with little scrutiny.

Pete Enns wants to also try his hand at the “Atheism requires …

He’s right that it’s a different thing for me (as an atheist ) to say I don’t think God exists than it would be to say that fire burns paper. Probability-wise, I’d say the chances that fire burns paper are around 999999 out of 1000000. …
